Germany

The origin of the Wischhoff family name has been quite nicely published in a German newspaper article of some decades ago (see the History section on this site). The article shows that the name has its source in the area between Hamburg and Hannover in Northern Germany and can be linked to a specific farm ("hof" means farm in the German language). I have reason to believe that in that area a farm with the name "Wischof" still exists.

During my searches on Internet I found many records of the name in inter alia the archives of the Mormons (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), also spelled as Wischoff and Wishof(f), in other locations in Germany, such as Suderwich near Recklinghausen in the Middle of Germany, and Neckar in Württemberg in the South. Unfortunately the information is very fragmented, and family relations are difficult to make. For further research I will have to consult church records.

In Germany several towns have streets named Wischhoff or named after a person named Wischhoff, like Wentorf-bei-Hamburg (left picture) and Dittmern (near Soltau, right picture):

On the Internet I have found a reference to a coat of arms for the Wischoff family. It is supposed to be included in the Hamburgische Wappenrolle, but I have not been able to verify this. The meaning of the coat of arms is also unclear to me, but the anchor seems to point at the symbol for steadfastness, resolve, and courage. It looks like this (only in black and white):
